This is the general flow of how you should give an update in a weekly project meeting.
(1) High-level 1-2 sentence on the general project and topic that you're working on. [Remember that your team members are working on other projects too! Bring them into your frame of mind.]
(2) What exact problem you're working on [without going into details].
(3) Your progress that you want to report [now you can start going into details].
(4) Your current challenges.
(5) What you're going to work on next.
The whole thing should take 30-60 seconds, roughly.
Note that (1) gives context to (2), (2) gives context to (3), and so on. This is great because your listeners can connect the dots together.
It’s not absolutely necessary to stick to the ordering. The different elements bleed into each
other. But just be judicious about how you want to present stuff.
Eventually, this flow should feel natural, and you won’t have to specifically think about it as 1-2-3-4-5. At that point, you’ll sound competent and confident, and your teammates will be able to
connect with your messaging!
